VoIP ... "Voice over Internet Protocol "
The Future of Voice Technology
VoIP stands for "Voice over Internet Protocol " and it is quite simply a way of using the Internet to make and receive telephone calls. The primary reason VoIP is becoming so popular is cost and convenience; VoIP is significantly less expensive than typical local and long distance telephone service offered by traditional phone companies. Additionally, one high-speed Internet connection can serve for multiple VoIP telephone lines such as SIP or PRI.
VoIP makes possible other services that older telephony systems can’t provide and VoIP telephony services work well over properly certified structured cabling networks, usually Cat5 and Cat6 copper, as well as fiber optics. VoIp can be also highly portable and will work with any IP-enabled device. Bandwidth and QoS (Quality of Service) must still be sufficient, most Internet circuits today have ample bandwidth however, the QoS may not be acceptable.
Advantages of VoIP include potential savings and greater scalability of systems. A disadvantage is that it requires a reliable high bandwidth internet connection with a guaranteed QoS. VoIP is typically not as dependable as traditional Land Lines or POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) Lines. This issue is becoming less impactful as most large reliable internet providers are constantly improving their QoS.
Increased Flexibility and mobility
VoIP telephony does more than increase savings by lowering costs. It also enables the user to integrate software programs, such as e-mail, e-fax, mobility, and simplified conferencing over the Internet via the telephone. In other words, a VoIP user can speak to somebody over the phone while accessing other applications, including the Internet simultaneously. VoIP users can take their phones anywhere, making it possible to hold telephone conversations at venues that offer an Internet connection. An increase in mobility assists individuals who are always on the move, especially corporate employees who are required to travel. Long distance-International VoIP calls are also relatively cheaper than traditional cell phone calls.
Easy to trouble-shoot for IT professionals
We recommend professional installation of VoIP services as there are many technical interconnecting pieces that all require near perfect execution. Mobility of the VoIP system offers an advantage over traditional telephones, for instance, businesses no longer require separate cabling for traditional telephone systems. The scalability of the VoIP infrastructure makes it easy to add new components with minimal hassle. Since the transfer of voice to digital signals occurs using software instead of hardware, it makes it easier to alter and maintain the entire system. IT pros appreciate VoIP because they can typically manage the entire voice network similar to their management of a computer network. Legacy Telecom highly recommends that a certified licensed structured cabling contractor perform the cabling project if new. If a decision has been made to go with VoIP to replace a digital key system, Legacy Telecom highly recommends that a certified licensed contractor is hired to perform an inspection and audit of the current cabling. We are seeing a big up-tick in Hosted and VoIp systems being sold blindly by sales organizations and phone service providers without an inspection and audit of the structured cabling network. More often than not, multitudes of problems arise forcing the fully committed customer to back-track and install instead, a phone system that works properly with the current network. We’ve replaced more than one new Hosted VoIP system, and one is too many.
Keep in mind that VoIP and Hosted is definitely the future but may not be the best choice for every business just now.
