Digital phone systems come in all shapes, sizes, and qualities. Most Digital phone systems can be identified as KSU (Key Service Unit/Key System/Hybrid KSU), and PBX (Private Branch Exchange).
Key Systems (KSUs) are traditionally used by small to mid-sized companies because of their ease of use. A Key System has telephones with multiple buttons (“keys”) and lights that indicate which lines and phones are in use. When you want to place a call, you just press a button to access an outside line or an inside extension (phone).
As with most modern technologies, these systems have improved over the years and tend to blur the lines between VoIP, Digital, PBX, and Hosted. Some systems can now have a multitude of functionality.
As with most products, Digital phone system manufacturers make low, middle, and high quality offerings, with cost and quality typically going hand in hand. There are still some very good quality Digital phone systems that can fit the needs of most small to mid-sized businesses. The newer systems will have Automated Attendant and Voicemail built in, and both can be utilized as little or as much as desired.
These systems can also be very simple to use. Most businesses just want their phones to work and prefer not to take valuable employee time to learn all the many features and gadgets, many of which do not get used in day to day business communications. This doesn’t mean the features and gadgets are bad, just that many businesses still prefer to pick up their phone and press a clearly labeled button that performs the perfect function, placing or answering a business call.
